Mantra, Kīrtan & the Power of Sound

Life can become busy and outwardly focused, especially during times of increased responsibility and stimulation. This makes it even more vital to take time to bring our awareness and energy inward—to restore, recalibrate, and reconnect with Source. Kīrtan offers a powerful and joyful way to do this.
At its heart, kīrtan serves two essential human needs: to generate energy (śakti) and to expand consciousness (śiva). We need both vitality (śakti) and awareness (śiva) to move through life with purpose, fulfilment, creativity, and peace.
Kīrtan is composed of Sanskrit mantras, ancient sound formulas that work on multiple levels of our being. These mantras are expressed through different branches of yoga:
Nāda Yoga & Mantra Yoga work directly with sound vibration. The frequencies of mantra and music affect us on subtle and deep levels—touching the emotions, quietening the mind, and transforming ingrained patterns or saṁskāras.
Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion, invites us to offer our intention and energy toward something greater than ourselves. When we chant with devotion, the heart naturally expands.
Many mantras invoke archetypal energies that live within us. For example, Hanumān embodies courage, strength, and devotion; Śiva represents consciousness, stillness, and transformation. By merging our awareness with these qualities through mantra, we awaken and embody them within ourselves.
Vibration, Frequency & Resonance
Mantras generate thought-energy waves. When we chant them, our whole system begins to vibrate in resonance with their frequency. Just as we are shaped by what we eat, we are also shaped by what we repeatedly vibrate with.
We are what we chant!
Mantras act as bridges—portals—to higher states of energy and consciousness. They can lift us out of repetitive negative thoughts, emotional heaviness, and dense or contracted states of being. In this process of purification and transformation, increased light may also reveal shadow patterns or unconscious beliefs. When these arise, we are given a precious opportunity: to feel, to witness, and to consciously choose a new pattern.

What Is Mantra?
The word mantra comes from Sanskrit:
man = mind
tra = to liberate
A mantra is a vehicle—a tool—that brings the mind from a state of flux into stillness. When the mind becomes still, we naturally return to our true nature: peaceful, loving, blissful, and free.
Sanskrit mantras are said to correspond with the subtle energy centres along the spine, known as cakras. When repeated with intention, they help awaken the vital life force that moves through these centres—kuṇḍalinī śakti.
Kuṇḍalinī is often described as vast, largely untapped human potential. Mantra chanting is like planting seeds: with consistent practice, this latent energy becomes available to us, supporting creativity, clarity, healing, and the fulfilment of our deeper potential.
Mantra as Sound, Light & Union
As the mystic Anandamayī Mā expressed, mantras are “magical sound codes or words of spiritual power invoked from the heart.” They are living vibrations of light, resonating through our cells, molecules, and subatomic particles, awakening the energies of love and communion within us.
As Chloë Goodchild writes in The Naked Voice:“A mantra is a combination of sounds that has the power to free you from the notion of separateness by which your mind has been held captive all along. Through sound, one penetrates into Silence.”
In this way, mantra reminds us that in the beginning was sound, and sound remains the connective tissue of the universe.
Mantra Yoga & the Meaning of Yoga
The word yoga means union—to rest in our natural state of being. It is an experience of oneness with ourselves and with life, a flow state of harmony, presence, and ease.
Mantra Yoga is both the practice and the experience of this union. Through sound, repetition, devotion, and awareness, mantra gently guides us back into alignment—where energy flows freely, the heart opens, and consciousness remembers itself.
