I'd just written this kirtan song Namaste and we played it here at the Mosman Art Gallery in Sydney. The lyrics sprung from a place of wanting to express the new joy and awakening I experienced coming to live in Sydney, with a new love, new life and a whole world of potential awaiting. It's a song about realising what we need in life to be happy, to be whole and to heal. What struck me was that this really was the basics in life, yet I was only just discovering this realm of possibility. Acknowledging all of our needs, physically, mental, emotional, spiritual - not to mention social, planetary and cosmic! And by 'needs' I mean core needs, desires, impulses, as well as intuitive flow and insight. The stuff of humans. It's a song too about letting the inner child come through and be heard, let him dance and play. And above all, it's a song about celebration - of this miracle of life. What a wonder it is we are here. In this form! Did we choose this? Where did we come from? And to where do we go? Ah the sacred mystery, thank God!

I wrote this to help me overcome fear - the fear of being oneself, really speaking my truth, breathing my truth, owning my truth, no matter what may pass, no matter what people may think or how they may react! And this is what I call the 'kind truth' - so being responsible for and sensitive about what we do express and share to the world. But at the same time not diluting the potency of our innate power - harnessed for the greater good. For this, I have enlisted the power of Ma Durga, who protects us as she simultaneously helps empower us to embody our truth. I realised I was writing this for many of us - that many of us are on a journey to empowerment, this is really for this time. So many of us are speaking out about the abuse we have experienced. For me, it's about overcoming the reticence and powerlessness when I was a child, unable to really express or embody the wide range of emotions that makes us human. It's a reclaiming of power - healthy power - for the greater good. And not being afraid of this, as we take care not to abuse this as perhaps in other lifetimes we may have done!

The Tibetan mantra for compassion.

And what a mantra for living. I pray we can all remember and keep coming back to this mantra - or similar mantras of Love - to keep helping each other through the darkness and light, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. A sacred marriage contract for humanity! We are all brides and grooms to each other! May this song be the perpetual wedding bells of our commitment to loving each other and the Earth. Jai Ma!

Also big thanks to Dave Wakeman on sound and Campbell for the video. This is a great, popular Sufi chant. It means something like this: I am the lover, the beloved and the love. In fact, I am all of these, all at once. And beyond. Just as in meditation, following the theory of raja yoga, we are meditator, the object of meditation, and the meditation itself. And all of these merge and become one. Then we realise what is beyond. Or rather the greater whole of the sum of these parts! Though I don't really recommend meditating on this while chanting! Unless you are a diehard Gyana Yogi like myself, lol! But seriously, there is magic in these words, as with every Sanskrit chant. 'A' is for consciousness connecting everything. 'I' (pronounced 'ee') is for creative, expansive energy to the heavens. 'L' is lulling, lullaby, into Earthly love. 'H' is the great, aspirated sigh of the Divine, a birthing or a completion of a cycle. This is a wonderful chant to whirl to - do try at home! (Just clear a good amount of space for yourself in your living home!). Warning: may not be safe to drive to, as this chant can transport you beyond physical reality!
